The Influence of Terengganu Dialect on English Pronunciation among Low Proficient Undergraduates

The variation of English pronunciations as a result geographic proximity, or commonly known regional dialects is literary phenomenon that occurs worldwide. Due to the first language being Malay, most native Terengganu Malay (TrgM) speakers experience difficulties in employing Standard (SE) conversation. These dialectal features which are caused by mother tongue interference become more apparent when utilise their language, influenced dialect parts lifestyles, limiting significance usage. Therefore, this study investigates influence on pronunciation among low-proficient undergraduates. This adopts qualitative method research design while instruments employed task-oriented interviews, using diagnostic passage for oral reading tests. findings have shown TrgM characteristics pronunciation, such shortening pure long vowel, monophthongization diphthongs, replacement fricatives with plosives, and devoicing suffixes after voiced consonants. outcome contributes additional data field acknowledging identity heritage from point view.
